A brute-force method might be to just create one or a couple under General Discussion, bookmark them on the browser, and if traffic is slow, keep posting [whatever] to them occasionally so they get bumped to the top.

I'm wondering if the extranet might not be a better place to check out. i know the tech folks have been bustin' butt on it for a while. Just wondering when/if it will be made available for folks like yourself.

I think the office staff has been hammering on it for a while. Not sure what the extranet is good for beyond that. Needs a fat connection.

My understanding is that in an ideal world the thing would be used to make the very connections that the original post seesm to pine for. You're right about the need for a fat connect. As I understand it the roll out is happening in stages/phases. Not sure if what's driving it (in part) is this new push towards connecting with regional folks or not. Whatever the reasoning it seems like it could end up being a very interesting tool for those with the right net connection and need to coordinate/connect.

Took me a while to find the email w/login info from early July, the last time I checked out the extranet. Pages still come up much slower than the eplaya. Not much activity, just a few forms, policy stuff, bla bla.

hi everyone,

this is just a quick announcement to let you know that things have been
improving a bit within the www.blackrockcity.org extranet world. there
are a couple of recent developments that you should be aware of:

- the 'team roster' feature of the extranet, which has been so slow as
to be practically unusable, is now MUCH faster. like, 30-50 times
faster. the rest of the system is a little quicker too, but it's the
roster that was the biggest problem, and that showed the most
improvement. check it out... it's definitely the best way we have to
maintain the contact info for the people on your teams... and you should
encourage all of the people on your teams to visit their extranet
profile and make sure that their info is current.

- for a while we've had a couple of recurring "login" problems. some of
you may experienced this... sometimes you'd KNOW that you typed in the
right password, but you still couldn't get in. or maybe you got in, but
the first time you clicked on something you were brought to the login
screen. or, maybe, you got in, but it looked funny... it didn't have
any graphics or colors at all. well, we've fixed ALL of the known log
in problems. repeated testing cycles have shown that the problems have
been resolved and can no longer be reproduced.

if you ARE having a problem logging in, it's almost certainly a
password problem. the first thing you should do is contact the
SuperExtra liaison for your team. if you don't know who that is, you
can send an email to "extranet-access@burningman.com", and the helpful
grover at the other end of that alias should be able to hook you up. if
you forget all this, there is a link right on the extranet login page
(entitled "forgot your password/User ID?") that will provide all of this
information whenever you need it.

in addition to these recent improvements, we have a LONG list of changes
that we'd like to make to this tool to make it more useful and valuable
to you, the volunteer coordinators, and to the teams of people that you
work with. we're going to take advantage of the relative quiet (around
here) of the winter months, and plan on working like mad to improve all
of our systems, to make things less complex, more convenient, and more
effective. thanks for being patient with us while we've been building
our foundation...

The set of "those of us who work before during or after" is larger than DPW, though.

shooting the shit is what I was talking about... and not just for the DPW (disciplined polite workers) but for all of the hard working folks that put on this big big show (Gate, cafe, rangers, playacom ect...) I am probably the only one who wants this or maby not. All it would take is a few seconds to throw it in to the main menu but mabye there is not enough hours in the day to do this. If not oh well

Hmmm...interesting idea. The extranet does have a discussion feature, though few people have utilized it. The intention of it was for the volunteer teams to have a place to discussion project and team related stuff, tho it would be limited to your own team.

We could easily throw in a "worker" folder in the main forum index of the eplaya, but there is no way, to my knowledge, to authenticate who is a "worker" or not. So my guess is that after some time you'd get a lot of folks with rants about the org who are not workers diluting the content to the point of pointlessness.

But maybe I'm being too pessimistic. I'd like to hear more worker-folk weigh in on this. Whaddaya think?

Nah just kidding. That's a good point...sounds like instead of a "worker" area you really want a BM Volunteer group area, yes?

We're going to be reviewing the folders next week, and I'll include this request.

Oops. Correction..you would able to shaer your discussions with other teams...but you could only post if you are a member of a team.

I do belive Volunteers and workers are they not also non "workers" may wish to share or ask questions

but this is getting realy silly and nevermind it must just be to hard to make a new folder. I am so sorry for asking I will not bring it up again. I just figured all it would take was clicking add folder but it must need a majority vote from some secret council that meets once every 9 years so we will wait with mouse in hand for the secret vote behind closed doors...

Easy...as I said, we are reviewing the folder structure. The reason we are doing it is because we've have dozens of demands to shrink it down. It's been universally slammed as being too segmented, so adding folders at this point is illogical.

btw - the scret handshake has been replaced by a code phrase:

"Hi, I'm ____. I want to help with the eplaya."

The doors are open, and you can walk through them any time, iffen you want to.
