I found this article and it was the first I'd heard of this.http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-north ... f_peo.html It's funny because I did a Google search for Burning Man 1993 and read this cool blog post about the burn with only 1000 people,and thought how cool it sounded I'm not sure about 70k though.

It does not take much effort to find out what is happening with the BLM/Burning Man lease negotiations. A couple well-worded searches give amazingly informative results. There is a eplaya thread which discusses the 2012 Environmental Assessment, with links to the actual 300+ page report. If you wish to put the effort in, you can also find the actual lease agreement, exclusion zones, etc.

Since quite a few people have trouble reading a news article, this will be way to much effort...

Yes, the number is 70K, but no it's not 2013. The 70K number is a 2016 target, representing 6% annual growth and beginning with a cap of 58K this year. If you care to know the details, seek out the thread discussing the Environmental Assessment, the PDF doc linked there has all the data and planning info you could want for.

Yeah I was noticing that after reading the BLM link in that article. I needed to name this thread 60000 in 2013 it seems.

From what I read in the EA/BLM docs, it's a year to year thing with the final population number being granted by the appropriate BLM office anywhere from 58k - 70k. I didn't read anything about planned annualized growth..?

"Under the 58,000 to 70,000-Person Maximum Alternative (Proposed Action), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) would issue a five-year Special Recreation Permit (2012-2016) for the Burning Man event in Pershing County, Nevada, with a maximum population from 58,000 to 70,000 people. The authorized officer would determine the maximum population within this range for each year of the five-year permit.."
