good place to pull over overnight on 395 from San Diego

I am for many reasons, leaving San Diego at around 8PM.

12+ hr drive (solo) ahead of me.

I want to break up the drive with an overnight nap along the way. I'd like to set up camp on playa with some light.
Looking at the "google" I am somewhat in the boonies at a reasonable stop point. Somewhere betwen Lone Pines and Bishop.
I can sleep in my vehicle. Honda element (but not an RV) certainly not adverse to getting a hotel, but I want to get at least 4-5 hrs of driving out of the way the first night. ( get through LA at night)

anyone done this? reccomendations?

Push on to some great campground? retire early because the drive is better early the next morning etc...

Any thoughts appreciated.

I like Bishop. Plenty of places to eat and the KMart welcomes people to park overnight in their huge parking lot.
