How to bring the stuff?

Hello,

I have a big project on the start, but I have a big interrogation point.
How to fet it over there.
Since I am in Iowa and BM's in Nevada, U-Haul is gonna charge me 20 years of wages for a round trip.

How are you doing it?
Is there a way to share if you have a truck that would come close to Iowa?
How much does it cost (The truck renting guy told me 3000 dollars!!!!)?

Hhhmmmm.... How big are we talking?

Yes, U-Haul will bend you over and take liberties with your checking account usually reserved for that trip to Vegas that nobody talks about.

But really how big is this thing? If it's big enough to fill a container unit then yes, it's going to cost that much. Pick up sized and you'd be better off finding someone with a nice big pickup, begging them to borrow it, and cleaning it like it's nobody's business. If it's big, but not heavy, you can try a trailer on a normal-old-truck. That's probably a cheap way to go and most rental companies are happy to rent trailers for round trip without mileage.

We are talking something like 20 chairs a few tables and a few other stuff. The fact is if it is too expensive, I will downsize it or change my project really fast since there is no time to waste now (80 days, right?)

The trailer idea might a very good one, I will look more in depth.

Been done many times... Buy the stuff you need in Reno and then drop it off to one of the Schools having a car wash on the way out. You win, they win.?

If it's largely seating and surfaces, maybe you can condense by hauling flat materials and lumber and assembling on-playa. Usable building materials can afterwards be donated to Burners Without Borders, right on site! Like ibdave mentioned, materials should be available in Reno or thereabouts.

If thes are folding chairs and folding tables you can fit that into a pickup truck if stacked correctly.

But if not...

Look at other companies in your area that rent to the construction industry or similar.

Of the big truck rental companies, Penske and Budget are much better than Uhaul. Call them and negotiate. They will often reduce the per mile charges. If they won't over the phone, go directly to a shop and try there. Keep trying. It's your money.

But almost anything is cheaper than U-Haul.

Try a local rental co. They may be more flexible in giving you a break on the per mile cost. .79/mile that Uhaul is charging seems pretty steep.

I know that last year there were a few people who volunteered their big-rigs to haul large container units from New York and from somewhere else in the US round trip. It was a point to point transport but all the users had to do was pay for gas and make sure the trailer was structurally sound for transport. It probably saved those people several thousand dollars!!! Quite a gift to the community!!

In other words.. maybe? I wouldn't bet on it tho..

Or buy one that a local school is retiring. The end-of-school-year timing should be perfect now. You can often buy a bus, fresh out of service, super-well maintained, for the cost of a rental truck.

Sorry to be a spoil-sport, Dave (nothing personal!), but I would not touch that old heap with somebody else's ten foot pole. And certainly not at $3.000,-. I had a similar bus from 1982, and I paid $250,- for it -- straight from the school district.

Somebody else's given-up-on project is just too scary.

For $3.000,- you can get a 1990 or even 1995 that is fresh from a school district.

Hi Etienne,

Are these [b]special[/b] tables and chairs that you want to bring? Are they hand painted works of art you want to show off?

If not, I would consider leaving them at home in Iowa and picking some furniture up from Freecycle in Salt Lake City or something.

You might want to consider some of this 'Playatech' furniture as well.

All of this furniture on that page is made out of pieces of plywood, which slots together to assemble, then disassembles to stack flat. No screws needed. Minimal space.

All you would need to make Playatech furniture would be plywood, a jigsaw, a drill, a pencil, an electrical outlet, and a measuring tape. A sawhorse might come in handy, too.

You might save a little on shipping costs if you bought the plywood closer to BRC, such as in Reno. Maybe you can cut the plywood into shape from the tailgate of your pick-up, who knows?

If you are really in a pinch, some lumber stores will even make the cuts in the plywood for you. Sometimes they charge, sometimes they don't. If they do charge, it's usually a dollar a cut.

You'd still have to make all of the cuts, so you should make a few of them at home to see how hard it is, and how long it takes.

When it comes time to pack up your camp, you can either donate all of your playaware furniture to families in need on the way out, or simply burn it all. No need to haul it all back home again.

And as a preference, don't burn plywood. Burning anything puts nasty particles in the area, but playwood is worse than regular wood.

This is actually a good point. That is what I would do if I could be sure that I can store things somewhere in this area. I am pretty restricted in terms of coming to get it also, so...I don't know.
