Trucks as potential mutant vehicles

Moderators: Don't panic!

There has been a lot of people looking for the perfect base for art cars and mutant vehicles. Most cars are unibody constuction and when the car is dismantled the frame and sturdiness goes with it. What's needed is a vehicle with frame rails that will support the weight of a lot of people and the structure that's built onto it.

There are various truck rental companies that sell off their vehicles after so many years, and I am finding that the boxes can be removed from the vehicles, leaving behind just the driver's cab, engine and a long flat area in which to build on. Some are as low as 24 inches off the ground.

Without giving specific company names, I recently bought a 10 foot Toyota box truck for $500. It runs perfect and ready to make some sort of MV out of it. With a few minor repairs and a good going over by a mechanic, this should last for years.

This is the smallest box truck that I know of, but there are much larger ones available for very short money.

I suggest modifying the subject title... not every new poster is going to stop and read the post, and whine because you got to sell a truck.

Suggestions?

yes, a stripped down pick-up truck (small or big) makes an excellent MV base.

some of those big box hardwarde stores only run thier massive modified f350's up to 10,000 miles and sell them.

you can get them really cheap, i think ive seen them run @ about 13,000 for a virtually brand new truck. but unfornunately they are gas and not diesel because they can't trust the renters to put the appropriate fuel in them. they do only get about 10 miles to the gallon.

I agree.
What I found is well beyond a pick-up truck. It has a pick-up truck passenger area as well as heavy duty transmission, dual rear wheels and 10 feet of frame rails. This is a beautiful blank canvas.

So long as it doesn't resemble a truck. DMV rules, not mine. Now, make it street legal, or haul it? They store MV's at the ranch, but not sure of who's to suck. Must hand it to the creators of LaContessa and the Traveling Tiki Bar, loved them both! And to the santa camp that tried to bribe me with sex, even though I was gonna pass your vehicle anyways, thanx!

If I were you Shambala, Id only sell it to someone with a wicked plan for it!

If you're up to doing the grunt work, old motorhomes can provide a great mutant vehicle platform. If they run OK but are otherwise a total roach, common with older stick'n'staple RVs, you can strip off the body and end up with a very solid chassis and frequently even a generator. You can even leave the water tanks on it.
You will need a big trailer to carry it on, but that's always the case with big MVs.

TomServo, the wicked plan will be mine----all mine. Drawings are underway for a true art car/mutant vehicle. As in the case of most art cars, it will have license plate and be street legal as well as be modified so extreme as to be able to get a permit on the playa---both day and night.

A street legal art car, the only way to travel! Tiny tip, added safety features give Hotties a hard on! Even the female Hotties. Can't wait to see your little plan on the playa!

Just on the off chance.... If anybody removes a cargo box about 20 feet long, I may be able to put it on my trailer chassis. No money involved.

I'm brainstorming that I would like to convert one of my boat trailers into a box trailer -- and maybe I could do that by bolting on a used cargo box.

The cargo box would have to be of fairly light construction, of course. And the owner would need to be more concerned about getting rid of it than of collecting the scrap value.

Since I would no doubt need to do some fabrication to mount the box on my trailer, it would probably be best if the truck were driven to my place and we take the box off here. But it the box is allready off the truck, I could probably fetch it with the trailer -- using some timbers and straps.

It's just a wild brainstorm, but once-in-a-long-while a silly brainstorm turns into a perfectly good solution.

Elliot (if infact that is your real name), I found that some of the truck rental companies that run their trucks to the death, will remove the boxes and use them as storage units. Depending on the manager of the local location, you can get one of these boxes pretty cheap. Some of the managers I came across were dickheads and would budge on the price, but others were just happy to move vehicles and boxes out of their lots.

Another thought is to find an older box truck that is not working and won't run. For a few hundred dollars you can buy the truck, remove the box and junk what's left of the carcass.

Shambala, those are both great ideas!

And come to think of it, if I drag home a complete dead truck, I might just remove the cab, front suspension, and stub-axles, and turn the rest into my new trailer.

So many wondermuss opportunities!

And yes, "Elliot" is the given name on my driver license and in my passport. And while we are at it, that's me (in top hat) "sailing" one of my own creations in my avatar.
