Eplaya is like a neighborhood crack dealer....the first snark is free.
(but they keep coming back regardless)but seriously; there are several ways to hook up with camps/art projects in need.
1) Ahead of time pre-playa (like you are doing now), but that tends to work best for people near each other who want to work pre-playa. This year because of the ticket issues faced by many camps, there are openings galore in many camps (and the afore mentioned places to look already set-up....) but usually most camps build by "word of mouth" locally, or by people meeting on-playa.
2) on-playa by going to center camp playa information
3) on-playa by wandering around looking for a cool camp or project that is still being set-up and offering to help
none of these methods talk about volunteering early for on-playa, because of the "playa time effect". Regardless of best intentions, it is almost impossible to be at a given place at a given time on-playa (the Larry Uncertainty Principle at work) especially for more than one person. Therefore, only casual attention is paid by most camps in need by offers by strangers of on-playa work this far in advance....most camps do not even realize how seriously behind they are yet, and wont for about 4 weeks.
Have you tried locating your Regional's Group? There is plenty of time this summer to meet local Burner's and get thoroughly entangled in a project pre-playa...
good luck with finding a needful project or camp that can put your enthusiasm and passion to good use!
