"Edward 40 Hands" Theme Camp

I would really like to set up a theme camp which allows people to participate in a game of Edward 40 Hands. If you are unfamiliar with this game, this should help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Fortyhands

I have never been to burning man, and know very little about it outside of the episode of Malcolm in the Middle. So if anybody has any advice/ideas on how to make it happen in the near future, please let me know.

Kevinstu, you chain-yanker . . . if you're not actually kidding, and I kinda think you are, I forsee some shattered glass & vomit in your camp, i.e. some of the most difficult-to-manage MOOP (trash; Matter Out of Place) in existence. The latter is a nasty biohazard, and the former is an ordinary hazard. Both are wretched to clean up, and drunk people are terrible at cleaning up after themselves. So, it sounds like a lot of work for you to collect and haul out. Gloves, shovels, brooms, biohazard bags, etc.

Also, a camp like this probably wouldn't get placed in reserved territory, or listed in the programming if 1) the 40's are in glass, and if 2) competitive drinking is the point of everything, or even emphasized. It's certainly . . . interactive, and there's nothing wrong with another playa bar, but this concept--as stated in a nutshell--will probably not meet placement or publicity criteria, especially compared to the creativity of other camps. Note: that's a guess.

This may come as a surprise to you, but there were a few inaccuracies in the MITM episode. Let me cite just a few:
1) There is no cactus to be found on the Black Rock Desert
2) You will not find large rocks the size of bowling balls in and around Black Rock City
3) They do not find some yahoo to torch the man at the end
4) I have never had the ashes of a dead person sprayed on me
5) You really don't have to ask where the naked chicks are once you're there
6) There is no centralized place to dump your gray water from your RV
7) Shamans rarely relieve you of your virginity
8 ) There are no such things as Trumpet Strumpers

I would like to point out some things:

1. Edward forty hands is an excellent game. It is a great team and community building exercise. Each person helps out the other to reach their goal (two finished 40s). It is not necessarily a drinking competition. Its more of a challenge for everyone to get through, TOGETHER.
2. Two forties of bud light is approximately equal to no more than 6-7 cans of beer. Since there is no time limit, I feel this is a very reasonable amount of alcohol to be consumed. Think of all the stories told, and friends that could be made while attempting to complete this challenge.
3. It's the desert. If somebody doesn't want to finish theirs,simply turn your hands upside down.
4. Glass is a bad. You are right. Perhaps there is some kind of plastic alternative to the standard 40 oz. I will do some research.
5. I am a college student. Edward 40 hands is part of my lifestyle, and I love it ever so much. I would really like to give people (maybe some who didnt have a chance to party in college) a chance to partake in this wonderful experience. So if you are un-open to the idea of a "frat boy" participating in Burning Man. Maybe you need to reconsider why you are at burning man in the first place.
6. Dr. Pyro, I appreciate your help in clearing up the realities of Burning Man outside a Malcolm in the Middle episode. However, am I really a punk for having a slightly confused view? For the most part, it seems MITM gave a pretty good depiction.

Finally, FUCK BURNING MAN. I though I had a fun and exciting theme camp idea that would help share my experience with a bunch of open-minded people. Apparently I was wrong. You are just a bunch of haters trying to bring me down. As far as I'm concerned, you are THE MAN. I guess, Ill just take my ideas else where.

What you've posted makes you out to be an ignorant frat boy who's more interested in researching drinking games than anything about the event. If you want people to treat you differently, consider acting/posting differently. I agree with what most others have said. I mean sure, you can make whatever camp you'd like (it's not necessary to register your camp), so long as you clean up after yourselves. That includes no pouring out drinks on the playa surface.

If you've not already run away crying and have a genuine interest in the event, I encourage you to go to the site's main page and read the first timer's guide and a little background on the event. Then, as you get acclimated on the boards or do a little more research on the event, you'll find that it's a city of great abundance (gotta be at least ten thousand bars). Building a camp around binge-drinking (you weren't calling it "team-building" camp) seems pretty foolish considering the huge abundance of Black Rock City, and actually kind of dangerous when you think about the high risk of shitloads of broken glass, or the risks of rapidly jacking your blood alcohol levels in a high altitude desert.

In some groups there is the mindset that you have to welcome every idea with open arms, keep silent with your doubts and negative feelings, and always compliment everything and keep the 'positive energy' flowing. That sort of saccharine system is ultimately just dishonest bullshit.

I don't interpret the "radical inclusion" espoused by Burning Man as anything like that. The point is that you can bring in any idea, make whatever art you want, and live how you want to live. It doesn't mean that no one will criticize or make fun of you. You just have to develop the same hardness that allows one to survive in the desert in the first place. It is also subject to, and limited to the sort of compromises necessary for 50,000 people to live in a small area which must be dismantled without any trace in a short period of time. You can live how you want, but if you endanger the city or its inhabitants, it will defend itself against you.

You also cannot sell shit or promote commercial properties. This can be taken as another exception on "radical inclusion," if you want to think of it that way. You have 51 other weeks in the year to enjoy buying things, selling things, and seeing advertisements. You can make a camp where everyone dresses like the characters or emulates the style of Jersey Shore, but you cannot directly advertise the show, or use the trademark "Jersey Shore" in your camp signage. Since most people at Burning Man are actively trying to take a vacation from commercialism, network television, and advertisements, few people will likely have any interest in such a camp - but I could be wrong.

I really don't care if these principles contradict each other to an extent, or are blunted by the pragmatic reality of running an actual city that exists in the real world. The net effect of the festival is truly something to experience. You don't have to fully buy in to every component of the whole philosophy of the thing, but you do have to respect the general effort and purpose of the people who make it happen if you are to enjoy it - and enjoying it is actually making it all happen.

To be fair Kevinstu, you did ask people what they thought. And some have helpful advise lurking within their opinions. I personally am loath to the “frat boy” mentality, but not to college boys. Given the info you’ve provided, it’s reasonable for people to assume you might bring that mentality to the playa, but being young and in college and enjoying getting shitfaced does not necessarily mean they are right.

I wouldn’t let the grousing of eplayans stop you from anything (myself included in that label). I have no doubt you’d find plenty of willing participants. Advise is nice, but most of it should go ignored on pretty much any topic. It makes for a better jumping off place than an actual plan.

My advise – Check out the website and do some research. Go with plastic containers. Get a bucket for people who want to upturn their hands. Have some kind of plan to keep it from getting as crazy as some think it might get. You could have a resting/rejuvenating/rehydrating spot, with lots of water and do frequent cleanups.

I will personally participate in your Edward 40 camp if you promise not to have a Jersey Shore camp!

Since you haven't been to Burning Man yet, I would recommend that you wait on the theme camp until 2013. There is so much to see and experience at Burning Man that your entire week will pass quickly. Do you really want to be hanging around your camp playing drinking games that you can do at home? Read the theme camp information on the Burning Man website, read it three times. Do you really want to do the work it takes to pull of a theme camp for your first burn? Having at least one burn under your belt would be very helpful so when you decide to do a theme camp, you will be better prepared based on real-world experience rather than your impressions from a Malcolm in the Middle episode. Actually, after I spent all that time ragging on Jersey Shore, a camp where you could go and get a spray tan or something of the sort would be pretty hilarious.

I think that you are probably trolling - but maybe not, either way, the playa is big, read the survival guide, come grab a space, troll or get wasted as you like, get dusty and live free

How about a camp with spray tans, but first you take masking tape and make words or pictures so that some skin is "tanned" and other isn't? Might be a nice underlayer for some freaking body-painting...

I agree this guy is full of shit, but that's an interesting point. Being from Jersey, I could understand not using the "Jersey Shore" logo from the show, but doing a Jersey shore camp with signage saying Jersey shore should be okay since it's a legitimate place name.

It would be like a Lake Michigan camp.

Of course for accuracy, it should really just be called the shore.
