My first year on burn night I rode past a playa blow job in the middle of no where. Two guys wearing top hats. We circled around with our head lamps pointed towards the action. The best part was the guy giving managed to give us a thumbs up without taking a breaking from the job at hand.

I'm not a fan of Jaeger (hate it actually) but I adapted "Sex on the Beach" to our culture.

I rode by a hot looking couple fucking in the middle of nowhere, with some guy with a high tech camera snapping shots of them as they did the bone dance. I suppose in defaultia I would have stopped to watch the show for a bit, but at burning man, it was just another piece of art. I smiled and waved at them as I rode by and they smiled back, it was somehow normal as can be. In BRC anyway.

Well....the very first day of my very first burning man I saw Steve Layba (?? I think was his name) and a woman do a show on a flatbed truck (rape, skin carving and sodomy with a bottle of Jack after he finished it) That was when I really knew I was in for a differnet kind of week. However, I think those days may be gone. I have to admit i didn't enjoy it at the time - they parked right next to our camp too - but I might appreciate it now. who'd of thought I'd get so nostagic?

Waaaaay back in 2000, which was my first and only (so far) burn (all fingers and toes crossed for 2012 to be my second), I guess things were (quite) a bit raunchier. I remember stumbling into a village, called, I think, either the Red Light District or, perhaps, the Black Light District, in which there were a number of couples (maybe just one? But maybe a few...) having very public sex on their campsites, with -- I'm fairly certain -- the intent to be seen. My memory of the scene is a bit hazy, but I kind of remember it being an "adults only" area and that one knew, when entering, to expect to see sexually-explicit art/performance.

I don't know if this is indicative of the culture having changed, or if 2000 was just a weird year, or if that was just a weird village, or what.

EDIT: There was also a "Great Canadian Beaver-Eating Contest" that year. Not sure if it was literally so, or if it was just a double entendre. A (male) neighbour from the Temple of Love came over to our camp one morning looking for a (female) teammate. We all politely declined. A few hours later, he had found somebody, and he brought her around to meet us (he was an unusual but very lovely neighbour).

I think it's less a matter of the culture having changed per se, than it is of pressures from BLM and other government agencies to put that stuff back underground. The candian beaver eating was alive and well into 2005, at least, but I think they no longer happen.

What I meant was, he was an unusual AND very lovely neighbour. He made us, a bunch of (mostly) noobs, feel welcome and wanted and at home on the playa. Everyone in my camp was very fond of him.

I think it's less a matter of the culture having changed per se, than it is of pressures from BLM and other government agencies to put that stuff back underground. The candian beaver eating was alive and well into 2005, at least, but I think they no longer happen.

I guess I see why this has to happen, since BM still takes place in the context of a broader culture. But it's too bad, since sexuality is such a major part of being alive for so many people, that the exploration of it as a cultural/artistic medium has to be "underground," both on the playa and elsewhere. I get that not everyone needs to see/be a part of it, but I think the playa provided a special opportunity for that to happen in a non-commercial/non-commodified (and hopefully non-exploitative) setting. (And I say this as someone whose sexuality and sexual life are quite private, even by the standards of defaultia. I'm not one of those explorers, but I have a lot of admiration for those who are).

I am not a sex expert, but IMHO the playa is more sexualized than all but a few public places in the U.S. And that is emphatically not a complaint. Explicit public sex has been discouraged for a number of years, but there are camps with private areas that encourage it, especially on the somewhat kinky side. Since my tendencies for public display are really mild, I could say that I don't care. But I do consider it a loss that the playa has become tamer in this respect.

I'm pretty sure that the great Canadian beaver eating contest was going sometime within the past 3-4 years, since we had a neighbor couple who won an honorable mention. But it's held as a semi-private event.

But, I really do not understand why so many people pretend that sex on the playa is no good or not as good or too much trouble. It makes me really sad. Why spread this false discouragement? What could you possibly gain from that?

Is someone saying that? Geezus christ.. I can't live it down. I still get to this day (night?) the pining from the girl.. "Come onnnnn.. like that time on the playyyaaaaaaaaaaa.." Something about a combination of the right amount of stimulants which both help and *cough* impede things make for some incredible multi-hour sessions. There was a point where we literally heard a cheer from the next camp over from inside the box truck. I thought it was un-related until we got the group thumbs up when leaving.
