I love the simplicity of the design.

Wish there was a way to use the fan in a push rather than pull configuration so that it is not in the moisture path.

Swamp coolers have big squrrel cage blowers with pullies and a belt, but you could use a cage from a cars heater fan blower and make some kind of shroud. My design keeps the fan motor cool and it didnt get wet.

You might be able to replace the pad with some kind of loose batting from a fabric store. Anything that will stay damp and alow air flow will work. The old coolers used sisel.

2) Which way was the fan blowing?

The cooler pad, any hardware store should have it. Not all areas are dry enough to stock swamp coolers. but if you build it you can pick up the pad on the way to the burn. they cost about $6.
The fan blows out of the bucket, or up in this case. It draws the air through the wet pad. The dryer vent on top is for directing the flow into a hose, then into your structure.

I'd bet you could get used computer fans for free from a computer repair shop/service and mount 4 side by side in a square configuration if you wanted to go super low-cost. behold the power of the communal mind!

Why couldn't you just set the whole thing inside? Your structure?
If you do put it outside your structure, would it work better to have an air intake on it that feeds from inside the structure?
I understand dry bulb/ wet bulb temperatures, how they work, and why swamp coolers are extremely effective in dry places. Just not sure about all the details on the swamp cooler works.

Yellowdog's link has some info that I posted re: the swamp cooler I made for our hexayurt last year. Worked great and was easy to build.

One thing I did different was to use a gravity feed from a higher tank to feed the pad. This requires a top tank, middle filter/fan section, and a lower tank with the pump and float switch.

The advantage is that it keeps your pump "on" time to a minimum, reducing electrical draw. I made a very rudimentary float switch to trigger the pump and used melted ice chest water to feed it. More details in the link above.

stack......i like your design, but i wanted to make something anyone could make, be completely self contained, and would fit in the trunk of a small car so all burners could bring one if they wish.

That larger fan is a 12 volt Endless breese and pushes alot of air, so im still playing with it. The 02cool fans supposed to last 72 hours on 8 d cells just didnt cut it. I checked on the 02cool cause you could cut the adaptor cord and connect it direct to a deep cycle battery.

Having lived in the Canadian prairies my entire life, the design seems (at first) to be counter productive... Now that I have revisited the design about 30 times I see the potential! (The key word is _dry climate_)

I'll have to build one for the next time I drive down to the burn.

If we could only focus our collective creative powers towards solving the worlds problems, think what we could accomplish ???

I think with a little modification this pump would be perfect. Only along the ideas that you only plan to cool during the day (makes since to me). Also seems to draw enough power to also run a little fan like your talking about.

The easiest way is with BBCode. Check that you don't have "Disable BBCode..." checked in the window where you write your message (just below the text box). If it's checked it won't work.

Next up you need a web host that lets you link from external websites. It won't make a difference for you but nobody else can see it.

When you want to post with BBCode (Really easy, you just copy/paste the URL, select it, and click the "Img" button in the line of icons above the text window where you write your message) it should look something like this:

Try pasting that exact line into your message and see if you can make an image show up.. if you can't then I bet the option on "Disable BBCode" is wrong. Just look for the check box and change it.

If the read head can't read anything off the platter then it keeps retrying during the boot up. I just gave them power and let them spin.. (it takes 1 piece of dust to screw it up.. 1# of dust will do it really really well!)
