You know I think after weighing all the options, that I may just go with a cheap pair of Converse All Star high tops. You can get a pair for $20 free shipping, they seal out the dust, decently comfortable, and I won't cry if I have to toss them afterwords.

Yeah, one pair of the hiking boots I used has speed laces and they still squeak.

I picked up a pair of brand new plaid Chuck's on Ebay as planned a couple of days ago for $25. They should do the trick I think. Planning on blowing through a brand new pack of socks while I'm there and just keeping the footsies covered at all times.

Just make sure to use a good pair of inserts with them, like the Dr. Scholls gel ones. I've been using Converse for years, but without the inserts your feet will hate you by the end of the week.

Decided against the Adidas but am now considering these. Found them on sale at REI for $60 bucks. They are very comfortable. But my one question is about the shoelaces. They have Quicklace. Will these hold up on the Playa and stay tight or will they slip? I have been reading things about squeaking (i'm a noob, not sure what that means) and I want to make sure that these type of laces work. Any info is appreciated.

i replace my laces with cheap, shiny ribbon. no squeak, stays tied, didn't turn playa-colored.



those boots were a bit too heavy for me in 2008 (very soft playa that year), so i bought these fake $10 cons at forever 21 last year.

My boots with full fabric speed laces still squeak from last year, but they always tightened, and still do, they just make noise.

I didn't pay that much for them. I got 'em on sale someplace, either REI or Any Mountain, I don't remember. Yes, the laces stay tight. What you can't see in the picture because it is tucked into the shoe is that there is a slide on the laces with a little button you depress that releases it. You pull the laces tight, slide the slide against the tongue, and they stay.

Yes, those are very similar to mine. Mine are Bates with a Gore-Tex liner and Vibram sole. They were at my army surplus store. Very nice and comfortable, and, like I said, the color of playa.

And the commenter on that product is dead on ... they DO take some breaking in, so don't take a new pair out there that you have not worn a while or you will end up sorry you did.

lets see various pairs of old ragged out chucks, a pair of docs, some army surplus boots (one painted sparkly blue the sparkly red), and old worn out pair of river shoes covered in fur....

the key is frequent foot washings with a vinegar mix, good lotion & a fresh pair of socks

Sanuks, sidewalk surfers. Anybody ever heard of these? I bought a pair and wore them for a weekend at a music festival. Very commfy! Good ventalation, my feet did not sweat. Eco friendly. You can wash them and they do not change shape. I love my Kingstons!

Ventilation is sort of a double-edged sword. Air lets in the dust. Your shoes can fill with dirt. I *always* wear socks on the playa, too, even to bed. Coat your feet in lotion, put on a pair of clean socks and go to bed.

But hey, it isn't like you are living on that playa all year, you are only out there for a week. If I really wanted to know what works best, I would look to see what shoes the people who are on the playa the longest are wearing. Have a look to see what DPW has on their feet.
