What to wear? What not to wear? Where to find and how to make anything from goggles to fantastic pieces of playawear.

Three Brothers need costume advice/suggestions!!

Postby JayBobBoy » Fri Oct 14, 2011 11:54 am

Hi Everyone!!

I'm going to TTITD in 2012 and would like some friendly ( or other?) advice on what type of playawear we should go for?

Two out of three of us have been to BM more than once and have our stand-by outfits for night and day, but...

I'm looking for something special...
Maybe incorporate the brother thing....or that it's my Bro's 40th bday that week...

Any thoughts????

Thanks for reading!

Dress like yourselves. Get crazy and funky, but don't try to dress like everyone else so you'll fit in. I have seen suits and ties, tuxedos, prom dresses and just crazy mish-mush clothing from thrift stores. It's whatever works for you. There are no rules and keep in mind, even naked works on the playa!

Maybe dress as a ship's crew, and in honor of your brother's birthday, let him be captain!

That would be really funny if it were done Chinese Dragon style, mounted on poles, and lit up for nighttime use . . . floating through a dance club.

Or three bikes, welded a distance apart in triangle formation with a shaped shell up top.

(Also lit up.)

I'm sure it's been done, but I don't care.

I went to visit some of the local thrift stores today for ideas. It's funny how things look different in defaultia vs on the playa. It's really hard to picture the items in action. I spent about $14 on two hats and a jacket. Coulda spent more....

Found a great formal military jacket with medals and gold buttons....awesome. I bought a few things to donate to the Black Rock Boutique, too.

Thanks for all the great ideas...keep 'em coming.

Overthinking.

-10 points.

The only question is: "do I like this". If the answer is yes, buy it. If the answer is no, don't.

"Need" is such a boring thought. Seriously.

I've bought things I've only worn once or twice & then passed on- I certainly didn't "need" them, but I liked them & they made me happy. If we define ourselves by what we "need" we can all wear basic pants, Mao jackets and a cap, done.

I would love to see more people in "defaultia" wearing clothes that made them happy (Other than the damn furry legwarmers & cowboy hats) as opposed to clothes that they thought were "correct" (trendy, fashionable, conservative, acceptable)...

I think the secret I missed was the idea of passing it on.

Like I said - like but dont need.

I really dont need 72 pairs of socks and 62 ties.

Time to start distributing the wealth.

Appreciate the mind jostle there Eric.

 I think we have well over 100 ties. We pass some on, but ties really can make a suit perfect, and lord knows I love a perfect suit!

That is a good point. In fact the tie I am wearing now took forever to find. It is hark to find something to go with a wine colored smoking jacket and shiney metallic bronze shirt! Meh, I'll post a pic when I get to work.

I have two smoking jackets, and they've never fit me. But I won't give them up. One is modern, made from brocade. I paid $3 at Boomer's Bargains, a store that, alas, is no more. I"m not sure of the provenance of the other, but it's older and silk.

My 3 boys/men have put in their costume requests for next Halloween. 3 jumpsuit costumes. Mario, a Ghostbuster and an orange suit for the felon. They are quite a group.
