In general, you'll have great ideas, show up, and realize you had no idea what you were getting into, and want to redo your entire wardrobe for next year, and then you're in the cycle. I'd say that the burning man symbol is fine, it's not sacred. One of the best things about burning man is the sense of humor, and most people don't take it too seriously.

Taboo: Anything that might be moop. This would be anything with feathers, fringe, sequins, beads, etc. Can it fall off what you're wearing, onto the ground, creating trash? Leave it at home.

Those EL wire walking people show a lack of originality and creativity and an ability to spend a lot of money for a pre-packaged everything that other people are guaranteed to be wearing.

There are camps like Kostume Kult and Sex Filth Avenue there to provide you with costuming ideas. I say, if nothing is coming to you now, wait until you get out there and let some BRC denizens give you a faboo make-over.

I have said this before but will repeat just because I loves me some newbies - my very favorite costume ever was on a 18ish young man who wandered into my camp. He wore a ceramic cow head duct taped over his underwear (tidy whities so duct taped you could not see the cloth) and a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket on his head. Nothing else.
