what kind of socks to wear?

but really. can anyone recommend a breathable sock that won't let a bunch of dust in? Or should I stick with plain old white cotton tube socks?

Buy white socks in bulk - big bag from Costco Bring enough for two pair per day. Nothing like rinsed feet and clean socks to relax the feet. They are cheap enough that unless you want to wash them, you can just toss them when you get by to the default world. Disclaimer - last year was my virgin year but the above worked for me.

I highly recommend a reinforced toe if you are wearing boots. But yes. I get new socks twice a year and one of those times is for the Playa. I wouldn't throw them away though. That's just wasteful.

Thorlo's are one of my guilty pleasures! I love their socks. I think I have 3 pairs, I don't wear them all the time but they seem to last! The Cabela's version are pretty good too and a lot cheaper! Totally worth the $9-12 IMO, I save those for hiking or riding my bike around town.
I usually buy the 6 pack of whatever short sport socks that are on sale at Kohl's. (I bring them home and wash them after BM), it really is a nice little luxury to put on a pair of brand new clean socks out there!

I normally wear two pairs. The ranger boots I got were a little big....and theve stopped making them.

On the rare occaision that I DO wear shoes on playa, I loved having fresh, clean, brand new regular old socks from the big bag from Target. They felt fantastic....clean and dust free for my rarely clean feet. I wouldn't bother with expensive socks on the playa. You are changing your socks so often, I think the quality is not as important.

I own enough for one clean pair every day and a couple extra. At night, when it's cooler, lesser socks suffice... although much of the night is spent on your feet, so it's worth considering better foot care.

For warm weather, nothing beats the ThorLo Light Hikers with CoolMax.

With sandals or any open shoe, ANY sock is going to let your feet get dusty, short of waterproof socks (very bad idea).

If I am wearing boots, I like a thin liner sock (poly or silk) as well as a regular sock. This cuts down on friction and blistering. I like the cool-max blend varieties with good heels and a cushy sole, and usually watch Sierra trading post, or rei outlet for closeouts or seconds on bridgedale, or woolrich. I don't care if they spell Bridgedale with a k. They seem to last long enough to cover the cost. If I'm just wearing sneakers, I like the bike socks I've found on Sierra trading post from time to time. some fun designs as well, frogs, lizards etc.

Cheapest 100% cotton socks you can get ... dollar store socks. Wear once and toss in the burn barrel.

Do enough hiking and trekking and chances are you have them anyway. I don't know that I'd buy them just for BM. But since I already have them, I'm sure as hell gonna use them!

ThorLo's will last for YEARS, even with regular use. And they're made in the USA, not by slave labor in China or Malayasia.

I wore this type of sock with all leather combat boots for 9 years in all kinds of conditions. I find them better than cotton which tend to fall apart, or fall loose inside the boot, which really sucks! Plus they have a padded sole in addition to the reinforced toe.

Never thought I'd be so nastalgic for socks!
