Wind Loads

I'm looking forward to attending my 4th burn and I'm designing a prefab 2 story tower for my camp. A structural engineer friend of mine has offered to do the structural calculations but wanted to know what wind speed to design for. I was figuring a sustained wind speed of 80mph would be a reasonable number. Any thoughts?

that's where I'd go.
gotta have a cushion, and, gusts can get close to that.
also, remember they can come from any direction........there is prevailing, but, in a big dust devil/dust strom, with swirling, all bets are off.
ask your engineer, if the addition of copious amounts of dust, adds to the force for a given wind speed, due to the mass of the dust.
I've always wondered that. I think, it should.

I put up a black balloon while the surface was claim..
Suprised me to find the wind changed direction about every twenty feet.

I think it has hit 100mph before, though these past two years it's been abnormally calm.
It will also depend on where your structure is placed for shielding and what direction most of the wind goes, even if it changes. I remember reading that the wind blows more in certain directions.

The top wind speed most frequently quoted on the main Burning Man website is 70 MPH. However, expecting up to 100 MPH is nice if you can swing it.

The gusting is worse than steady wind.
