Where to get scrap metal for a dome?

Hey everyone, looking for good places (preferably around the seattle area) to get scrap conduit I can start collecting to build a dome. Any general ideas about where would be much appreciated. Cheers, hope y'all had a good 2011 burn, see you next year!

Have you contacted a scrap yard or looked on Craigs list?

check out the folks that use a lot of it......electrical contractors..

however you will likely find only short pieces no matter where you look

scrap metal and build a dome, don't really go together. Your going to need lots of long strait pieces, anything that has come from a demolition will be bent as fuck, and anything that is left over from new construction will be very short. It's not that expensive to buy, especially if you buy a few tubes at a time, you know, slowly save up your conduit stock. Also don't cheap out get the thicker stuff, you'll be glad you did. I have a dome made of 0.75" and i wish i had used 1" or 1.25"

My family works in construction, you would be surprised at some of the stuff they take to scrap. Depending on how large of triangles you want he could find some pieces. Just throwing it out there. Don't shoot the messenger.

For our 3 domes, we had several sources:

1- We have a retail scrap metal yard in our area run by Sims Metals. Not all Sims Metals have a retail yard; check their website

2- Craig's list is a good source for contractors / one time projects that had leftovers from their construction/deconstruction.

3- In a pinch, you can go to the big box home improvement stores, which carry full 10' lengths, for about $12 a piece (or so)

4- We found several pieces whilst yard saling.. there would be a bundle of EMT conduit sitting on the side yard that they forgot aboout and the woman of the house is so grateful to get rid of it that they let us have it.
