Shade options (No.675)

I'm about to click "GO" for an EZ-Up Sierra (with silver ona inside) and 2 lentghs of 7x20 aluminet.

Thought being that I'd put the EZ-Up over the tent and wrap the aluminet around.


Is this just crazy talk?


I'll only have a couple of days once stateside to get all my shit together and thought this might be a viable option for shade.

Make sure and buy extra rope and stakes to wind proof it and plan on setting it up on the North/NorthEast side of an RV or other large vehicle.

Best option would be to buy a roll of duct tape and 4 steel fence posts or long garden stakes to drive into the ground where each pole sets on the playa. Then tape the poles to the posts.

The EZ Ups are not the most sturdy shades. If there is a bad storm while you are out there, it might get destroyed. Or worse, turn into a projectile. Last year our neighbors had one and it magically survived a storm, maybe the RVs around it broke the wind. But I've also seen one be put up and then turned into shredded metal mere hours later.

Truthfully, it LOOKS flimsy.

Strangely enough I'd recently read a few really positve reviews about how it'd fared out there, and thought maybe it was an option.

Starting to think that if I have to go fence post anyhow, maybe it wouldn't be impossible to put something sturdier together and just aluminet the roof as well. Which somehow sits better on my stomach.

Ok. I just read this all to my longsuffering guy here.

He finally graceously stopped scratching his head and asked me to describe more carefully just what I had in mind.

After he stopped laughing, he explained the difference between fence post and metal pipe.

Apparently I misunderstood what was needed for securing.......


He seems to think that if we secured the fencepost securely enough (which he'd be likely to do very well) the sailing away and becoming a car and camp-wrecker shouldn't be much of an issue.


I just wish I had this sorted 2 months ago.

We tend to err on the side of caution. We've seen too many more worthy structures get torn out of the ground...once one landed on someone's car and did quite a bit of damage.

fence posts? as in the green metal ones with the little hooks on the side that hold temporary fencing? I'm trying to come up with a way to make our shade structure a bit sturdier and we have a ton of these behind our shed. just curious. thx.

Meanwhile, I have just had all my dreams come true in the form of an instructable-via-telephone with FigGem, which has sparked new entries on Triken's shopping list for the next couple of days.

(we're already good with the 18" stakes. Strait and otherwise!)

I'm almost speechless. (but trying to get my fingers to work to share this)

Figgy just called in an addendum to his original plan that I think MAY have just popped a bloodvessel in my left lobe. It includes the simplest tent-within-a-shade-tent --- probably makeable in a day --- probably for the price of a Walmart tent --- totally playa-worthy and adaptable to pretty much anyone's needs.

I'd scan my notes, but I don't have a scanner.


And, I'm extremely sorry to say it, but I have to get to bed pronto (it being half-past-already-tomorrow here and me getting up early), so I can't even begin to describe it. I will TRY tomorrow to get it written and okayed by the master. (sometime after going to the airport to get my botched ticket sorted out, getting the school supplies and some groceries.)
