This year we will have camp members coming in later in the week. What do you all find is the best way to mark your camp? Weather balloon? Flag?

Um, yeah. Once you have your camp set up and a physical address, then go to playa information near center camp, and leave a note for them. You can enter it into the computer I think. If they arrive after dark, they should park anywhere they can until daylight. Finding your own camp at night is hard enough. Use their bikes to try to locate camp so they aren't driving around.

Because there are five hundred weather balloons, and many, many thousands of flags. And kites. And giant pink beavers, and purple bunnies, and about a hundred naked mannequins wearing goggles, Mardi Gras beads and a dildo. A sign or a mailbox out front with your names and fanciful camp name helps. If you have Verizon, you might be able to get a cellphone call through. Maybe.

After you arrive and set up camp go to the Playa Info/Directory located by Center Camp. You can register where your camp is and then when your friends arrive later in the week they can find where your camp is at.

This worked really well for me last year when my son came to BRC a day later than us. I didn't have cell service to tell him where we were but he found us with no problems...

Are you thinking of a theme camp?

If you can, select an intersection. Much easier to find that way.

:) I know, I know. I'm not a virgin, but this will be our first year with a marker. Anyone had any luck with weather balloons?

I don't want to depend on just the playa info computer bank. The marker will also be for the people in our camp who are virgins.

Though I do like the beaver and dildo themes, we use a 25' flag pole. Before leaving for the playa give your campmates a general location of your camp and also a picture of your flag. Over the years, not one campmate has gotten lost...even at night.

The Wonder Pole http://www.wonderpole.com/ is a great telescoping pole that can withstand any amount of wind. We attach the pole to a T-Stake. Make sure you use a high grade flag. The elements will take a toll on it.

We have people coming to find us all week. I give the ones most likely to get lost a Motorola 2 way radio to call us after they get inside the greeters area ( and they usually have and idea where we will be anyway ) .

Problem with a blinky light on top of a tower is, everyone has one.

I'm assuming you're talking about non-official theme camps. You can always agree to pitch camp in a general area on the map (say a particular intersection), that's a good start. If you both have a theme camp that interests you, then you can check in there regularly.

No experience with weather balloons; likely you'll have a tussle with the wind. How if the winds pick up while you're away? Will it carry the balloon into oblivion?

Good point, but ours have channels and sub-channels, so I pre-set them for an obscure channel ( with written instructions on which channel in case of battery problems ).

A great flagpole are those polls used by pool cleaning people. I've found three of them on the side of the road over the years. (You ever see one in any manner secured in a pickup truck?) The poles look weak in their extended position, but, no, they are high quality aluminum and not weak at all.

Secure it to the tallest upright you have in your structure and the flag will be high enough to see from blocks away.

If you don't feel the need for an exotic flag, just get some cheap rip-stop nylon at a fabric store and make something identifiable to your friends. In the flag below, the seams are glued.

My ripstop flag has been attached to the pool pole with Duct tape for years. The pole has never bent.

As was said, send a pic of the flag to all your group.
And, as a bonus, your neighbors will love you for your flag.

I've had blinkies last almost the whole week, on 24hours/day.

Really, that works for you? I find that I can't tell my fused former campmate from my fused former neighbor. And I call them by the wrong name and generally act unburnerly. Quite embarrassing.
