You might want to try Hengehold for the Bay Area. They have been burner friendly in the past, to the point where they have a web page addressed directly to burningman renters.

So, I am thinking about renting a box truck at Budget Sacramento, pick it up there and drive it to the playa. However, slight problem: I am German :) Trucks still seem to be available in Sac., however the registration online requires US Address / Phone Number etc. which i obviously don't have. Is it still possible somehow to rent a truck as a foreigner? Call them maybe? Any advice? Thanks in advance.

If the company you're interested in renting from won't allow you to book online, then yes, you should consider calling them and seeing if there's a way you can book a reservation by phone.

'smacks, I've a sinking feeling the answer is "yes," but did you get a feel if this year's changes with Budget rentals also extend to cargo vans? I was planning on down-sizing anyhow...

I checked the site and the (non-coupon) per diem cost of renting a cargo van looks to be more than I paid last year for a 16' truck! This price doesn't seem to go down if I change the dates (in the $43/day range) but if I change location to, say, SoCal, during TTITD it goes down to $30/day. Clever couponing will probably get me a rate I'll accept but I'm not keen on losing my cargo truck reservation at the last moment.
It makes sense if you don't think about it.

I just helped a friend move and their reservation got bump-upgraded from a cargo van to a... tall cargo van?

Image

It seemed the perfect amount of space for BM car-camping, with no need to stoop over as you move around inside. Plus, there's lots of hand holds and other holes punched into the metal for anchor points for hammocks, curtains, etc.:

The rate was $65/day or so, plus taxes, with unlimited mileage in NV, CA, and AZ. I asked the attendant if they allowed their vehicles to go to Burning Man, but she'd never heard of it. When we returned the vehicle, I asked a different attendant how they track if you've gone outside of the tri-state area and he said it was based on mileage. I conclude this means it doesn't have an onboard GPS that reports off-road excursions, such as going onto the playa.

Also, it was a hell of a lot less stressful to drive than a 16' box truck! Easier to lock, easier to climb into, and I expect easier to clean. The one we drove only had 6,000 miles on it, so I think they're new to the Enterprise fleet.

My friend's rental was with an Enterprise in Riverside, CA, but I imagine rates are similar elsewhere...

Well unfortunately I did not read this thred earlier(misleading title)concerning new Budget policies.Rolled into Gentry location today to reserve truck only to be told they were"sold out" and had been for some time.Asked how this was possible and was told their allotment was 33 trucks compared to 120 last year due to"politics".They were quite helpful though and told me to contact Sparks location.Tried online and was notified they too were sold out.Called the location anyway and got the next to last truck they had available.I was also told that the Carson City location still had"a few".So there is,at the moment, one truck left in Sparks and maybe a few in Carson City.

The Reno location and I imagine Sparks are looking at a severe drop in income this year due to this new policy. They both asked that I spread the word and help "put some pressure"on the powers that be who made this policy change.
