Teepee?

We have a nice big teepee, it is about 20 feet tall. We didn't think we'd be able to bring it to the playa, but we now have the chance to transport the poles in a semi coming from Denver.

So, questions -

Teepee worth it? Yes/No
Would people enjoy seeing it there, or would it just be "same old same old"?
Anyone on here bring one before? Problems? What worked well? What sucked?

We would probably not use it to sleep in, we'd have a different tent for that. The teepee would be a community focal point/hangout space/workshop space.

It is a traditional Sioux style teepee, with canvas cover instead of leather. Real wood lodge poles. Traditional lace up door.

That looks like it would be perfect for the playa. I think the shape of it would help make it resistant to the wind. I'm looking forward to seeing that set up and maybe take a look inside!

Man, I always wanted a Tipi, and those are super nice! A little out of MY price range at the moment, but maybe I could scrape up enough for the kids Tipi, still pretty cool and large enough for myself plus one to sleep inside fairly comfortably. I say bring it, but of course I'm biased.

They make shade, block wind, and let heat out of the opening in the top, but yet the space inside is small enough to still get your closest friends with a really bad SBD.

These tents were developed by a plains group of Indians. They were made for extreme conditions. And the plains can get some high winds. I don't see why, with the proper precautions, a tipi wouldn't work great. I have seen them there. Bring it.

You might want to think of a teepee as not simply a bunch of poles and canvas, but as including a set of techniques of using the material technology. The plains indians may have kept adequate house for them, but that doesn't mean that you can just pick up the poles and do as well. Not everyone has as sophisticated techniques for using a car as the elite drivers do.

Just like any other tent, if you don't stake down each pole, it will somersault across the desert.

You can use bamboo for the poles.

Absoluely bring it if it won't cause too much of a headache getting it there. I'd love to see it. A suggestion....maybe offer to it sun-weary Burners as an afternoon chill/nap space? Afternoon Native American story time? I'd love nothing more than snuggling down in a teepee for a good story in the heat of the day!

The tipi's (teepees) are fantastic on the playa...they do well in most any conditions, and yes, as bob pointed out, you must secure your lodging, or it will pull a "Cristo" on you and impale some japanese tourist halfway across the playa.

remember to point your door AWAY from the prevailing winds, and a floor mat will make your life less dusty (HA!) than without one.

all in all a very practical, simple and elegant solution to your housing needs.
