I have made both the sealed, toss in a pot kind, and from scratch while camping, but not in dusty conditions. The ready to go kind would be easy- it needs to be kept cool, but not refrigerated, so might be good to break out towards the end of the time. It tastes fresh, even when it isn't, and can resurrect dry slightly stale bread. A lot of modern fondue pots have a metal edge thingy to hold up the forks which provides cover for the bubbly cheese.

I have had campfire kinds made with beer and cream of celery soup- not as good as the real thing.

As someone who (A) grew up in the southwest, and (B) has been married to a Mexican for 25 years, I can assure you there is indeed "such a thing" as bad Mexican food. Just like there is such a thing as bad pizza, a bad cheeseburgers, bad grilled cheese sandwiches...

Just because you can melt some sort of cheese doesn't mean the food created isn't bad, it just means you're able to melt something.

I to encountered "bad" mexican food, but like BirthChazz I was asking for it, cause I ordered mexican in Bali last winter.... bad idea...

first thing that should have tipped me off was the waiter had to take my order 3 times, but it was a simple Quesidilla.... then when it came it was rolled up, like some sort of taco hybrid. tasted like a cats ass, not that's i've ever tasted a cat's ass, but if i did, I'm sure this taco concoction would have been fairly similar.

I love the stuff, but have never done fondue on the playa. Sounds like a decadent treat, but is also seems like a big mess/cleanup potential (like it is back in defaultia).

Chocolate fondue might be a better idea - the sun will easily melt chocolate and any residue / scraps will not decay and stink up the place.

Suggest looking at Teflon or otherwise wipeable to clean F-pots. Wipes can be burned. Soft breads can get he last bit out. Breads mold on playa unless specifically cared for as you know.

What to dip in a playa proven, liqueur ladden, chocolate fondue pot? Pretzels? Grapes? Apple? Pears? Bacon?

Raclette... fondue without the pot. You heat the cheese and scrape off the melted part.

Sadly, probably smarter than buying sushi in the Frankfurt main train station at 9pm at night. But this is what happens when you tell your small child- "ok we have 10 Euros left- you can have anything you want to eat, but it has to cost less than 10 Euros." We had been in Europe for 2 weeks, he chose what reminded him of home....
