Found in Man: Copper Urn with Cremation Ashes

That could be Rod Garret's ashes, which were placed in the man before the burn. He's the designer of the city, the man, and center camp, and he died on August 22nd this year. That's a very special urn if you found it.

I have found Urns on playa before, I always figured it was left for a reason so I bury them.

A posthole digger from DPW will sink a hole in playa 3-4 feet deep in just a few minutes....

WOW. I bet those were Rod's ashes. Just betcha...who would have though that the copper would have withstood the heat. Wow...

That wasn't an urn, it was last year's lottery pot. Guess someone underestimated the melting point of copper.

This Urn was certainly custom made. It is rectangular. Perhaps someone who knows if this is Rod's resting place can let me know, and if so, have his people get in touch with me.

Fundamentally, those urns are MOOP--no matter the level of sentiment attached to them. They need to be kept off the playa, and definitely not buried in it.

You know, crematoriums make money the old fashioned way -- they urn it.

Introduction of any "foreign material" was a big deal for the BLM when the org first looked at burn scar prevention measures for the big art ~12 years ago. They were fine with using a few inches of coarse quarry sand under the Man etc. as long as we used fireproof material underneath to segregate the sand from the lakebed. Kevlar and silica fabric was too expensive, but rolls of cheap fiberglass fabric worked out okay, ie not much of it fractured or melted. I understand in recent years they've gotten approval to spread the sand directly on the lakebed, and just blade it off during cleanup.

Stuff buried tends to work its way to the top over the winter -- nails, rebar, urns, feces, whatever. So yeah, it's moop.
