You know, when I do things for others and it makes me smile, I never tell people for the praise I might get. I tell others because it made me feel good and I hope to make others feel good. MAYBE it will inspire someone else to do something awesome & the "do a good deed" train can keep rolling.

Now I do think there's no such thing as a selfless act. We all do things only because of how it impacts us... even if we do "the right thing because it's the right thing" we're doing it because of how doing the right thing makes us feel.

I think it's awesome Soupman gifted a ticket. I think it's awesome he shared it with us. And if anyone is looking to make another lady squeal, I'll be practicing my squeal while I hunt for a ticket.

A - bestow a BM ticket upon someone, and then mention it in public.

or

B - don't bestow a BM ticket upon anyone, and gripe because someone who did mentioned it in public.

The point was the only reason to this post was to toot his/her own horn. A normal person lets others do the horn tooting for them.

I think it's awesome the Soupman gifted a ticket. And I totally understand why he posted. After all the horrible shit with people selling tickets at an extreme mark-up and the whiners posting about how unfair it is that they don't have a ticket, it's delightful to see a thread saying how great it feels to gift a ticket to someone deserving. Not tooting his own horn, just reminding us the true joy of gifting.

As I said before, the actual act of the gift I think is awesome. He really made someone's day. I'm sure he has at least three cracked ribs from the resulting hug.

Perhaps I was just raised differently. One does not announce their good deeds. The point is to DO the deed. Word gets around about those that are good people. There is no need to tell people "I did such and such...". The act of seeking praise for a good act taints the motivation behind the act.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the act itself. I'm simply pointing out the conflict in selfless vs selfish motivations.

As for reporting one's good deeds, I think we can all agree it's generally better to do a good deed and share it, than not to do the good deed at all. Some people embrace an ethos of humility, other people want to hear about others' good deeds as a source of joy and inspiration, but all of us agree that doing good deeds is a positive.

In this particular case, the action far outweighs any probable benefit from posting about it, which makes it a very obvious Good Thing in my book. Additionally, Soupman didn't try to say what anyone else should do, he simply stated what he had personally done, in a very positive and judgment-free way.
