Desperate Virgin Burner Seeking 1 Ticket

Postby sparklefairyprincess » Sun Aug 07, 2011 2:17 pm

Hello fellow Burners, I have been waiting to go to Burning Man for over 4 years now. I have even boughten tickets in the past, and ended up selling them to others because I could not go. Now that I have finally graduated college I am finally able to go to Burning Man, but alas, I find myself with no ticket, on the first year I am actually able to make the journey. It makes me sad, but maybe you can be my Burning Man Jesus and help Karma repay me for my good deeds in years past. Maybe you will even consider it a graduation gift for all my hard work. I ask face value, nothing more, nothing less. Can do over paypal or meet in the Bay Area. Willing to make you an awesome furry costume.

So that's + five for "Karma" (or is that plus six, for the capital letter?)
"Burningman Jesus" ohhh. another 5 or maybe 7?
"face value, nothing more, nothing less" three naivety points.
And having graduated from college and using "boughten" wow, that's another 7.

Will someone please check my scoring here?

....So... do you spend your time on this website just to make fun of people? I didn't know that making fun of others was a part of the Burner Spirit. I'll take all the "naivety points" I can get. Obviously, I have never been to Burning Man, and I'm learning the ropes here. If you really want to nitpick one Virgin Burner over their posting style and spelling, I'm sure you have nothing better to do but waste your time. But I'll remember your attitude, it's a great reflection of what this event is all about. Talking Shit, apparently, since thats all I've seen on this forum. Thanks for all your help, man. By the way, you just scored 10 douche-bag points.

Still looking for a ticket, from a nice person. :)

Sparkle,
There's a subculture on ePlaya that believes that they have some sort of right to be rude. They call it 'snark'. They think it's cute. It's really kind of sad. I've complained that they make this place unfriendly for newbies but no one seems to care about that. One of their big beefs is that, after years of posts, just about every possible question has been answered. Yet, newbies show up and ask the same questions over again. This logic gives them a free pass to fire snark at just about anyone, anytime.

Their current favorite target are people that didn't buy tickets in time. Read some of the posts looking for tickets. You'll see that the snark piles on.

In the past they have argued that they give people a chance first. That they wait before getting snarky. Your experience here is fine example of the lie. Your very first post on ePlaya got an immediate snarky response that was a poor attempt at humor with you as the butt of the joke. Regardless of the intent of your post, it's meaning, or if it was useful or not, you get bullied.

Hmmm, thanks for the heads up. It's really quite a turn off. I'm sure not everyone is like this, but it's not a good reflection of the "Burning Man Spirit" that I have spent so many years reading about. It almost makes me not want to go if this is just a community full of bullying assholes. Who the fuck do they think they are anyways? I thought the ePlaya forum was supposed to be useful place to have my questions answered? Oh well. I guess I'm only setting myself up to look like a dumb ass (which, I'm not). There is nothing fun or attractive about going to a Festival/Event/Party where people feel like they have free reign to be rude to others who have not had the opportunity to go to Burning Man 15 years in a row. I'm not going to deny that I know little about the BM ePlaya subculture, I just want a ticket. I'm just hoping the fact that I sold mine three years in a row will help me get one this year. *sigh* It's not like I have been wanting to go to this thing for years.... I guess I just didn't realize ....

Most of us are fairly dusty, crusty, jaded, and snarky.
A lot of us live hard, and play just as hard.
If you stick around you will find out Fuck Your Day, is just our way of saying, Hi, How are you.
If you stick around you will meet some amazing people, and develop a bit more of a thicker skin.
We play and treat each other fairly rough at times, but the compassion we share at times for each other is beyond anything you will ever experiance.
Do some reaserch, take a look around.

Good Luck on your search.

Burning Man began as an experiment in anarchy, with the Cacophony Society leading the charge.
The primary focus of the 'culture' is self-reliance.
Those that read the available material, before posting, do just fine.

There is a wealth of information here; there are many who are helpful, when questions are asked by folks who have done their homework.
There is also a pod of snarks, to snap at those who can't/won't/don't read before posting.

Please respond to the tickets OFFERED threads; sellers are not 'shopping' for buyers, quite the opposite.

Over 1800 (!) people have joined this board since tickets sold out, the majority posting to get tickets, without doing any homework at all.
The snarks are in a feeding frenzy with all of the fresh blood, if you jump into the middle of the pod unprepared, you're likely to get bitten.

In BRC, the camaraderie comes from the knowledge that everyone on the playa worked hard to get there; internet forums don't give the same grace...

Good luck in your search...

Such a typical response. You come on here with a few posts and want everyone to be taken by your story. And then when you don't get the response you think you should get, you whine that they are picking on you. Do you really think anyone gives a shit about your story? Go read the ones about folks who are dying, the long time burners shut out, people coming from overseas who cannot attend. Your down near the bottom of the pole. And besides, sellers are not purusing these threads looking for someone to sell their ticket to. All they have to do is post that they have one and wait for the avalanche of responses. And people DO get helped here everyday. But they usually don't come in after few posts and go off over folks who have been on this site for years. Can't stand the heat? Find another venue.

There are elevated levels of snark on ePlaya lately, which are somewhat justified.

If you look at the Burning Man website and read up on the event at all, you may have come across the ten principles, radical self reliance is one of them. Unfortunately, the 1800+ people who have come out of the woodwork since tickets sold out on July 24th all seem to demonstrate a radical lack of it, which is generally compounded by the post first, read later mentality that so many people seem to exhibit *cough*. Taking a few minutes to read things like the announcements or the topics or to familiarize yourself a bit before posting your needs is basic 'netiquette' on any site (not just an eplaya thing), the fact that you couldn't be bothered tends to get on some folks' nerves, and has a tendency to get you lumped in with the hundreds of others who are doing exactly the same thing.

Do check out the boards though, there's some good information here. Not just in learning the ropes and getting a clue when it comes to finding a ticket, but in getting prepared for the event (for many, it takes months of work) and sorting out logistical details. Good luck!

I am not asking anyone to be "taken" by my story, I'm not unlike anyone else who suddenly found themselves without a ticket. I'm not dying, I'm not sick, I'm not a veteran shut-out, but I am someone who has been waiting for this experience for years, someone who has given up their place in the past for the sake of others enjoyment, and I am coming from "overseas", in that I live in Hawaii year round. I'm a fire spinner, an artist, a writer, and costume desginer. I work hard and I spent all year hand crafting my costumes; I have my airfare, I have a camp, a ride, and woke up on July 24th, with credit card in hand ready to purchase, only to have my day end in tears and frustration. Since that fateful and unexpected day I have read the ePlaya forum 2011 ticket thread, ebay, and craigslist everyday. I do not feel like I need to defend myself against any snarky people, who seem to get some sense of self-gratification and ego boost from picking on ticketless virgin burners. If it makes you feel better about yourself, then go ahead. But seriously, why don't you go pack your bags and make a costume if you already have a ticket, or is this your way of mentally preparing yourself for the playa? The reason I posted a thread on here is not out of naivety; Obviously, I have read this thread over and over and decided to do as many others have done. Besides, you never know what your luck could be. Not only that but I read the Burning Man Ticket website, which clearly states that anyone looking to buy/sell tickets from legit Burners and avoid scammers and scalpers should do so on the ePlaya forum. So here I am. After sifting through scam after scam on craigslist, I decided to give ePlaya forum a go. So, I have been responding to all the tickets offered threads, and decided to make my own just in case. I welcome any more insults, injuries, and offers; it's not gonna hurt my feelings. I'm just shocked at the disrespectful, pretentious, know-it-all seniority status attitude you all seem to have.

Did you read what you wrote? I put it in quotes in case you missed it. You did all those things but DIDN"T GET A TICKET? Unbelievable. And please don't give me the "I just got the money" BS. As you say, you had your credit card in hand. What were you doing before then? You had 6 months to get one. This is what gets me. It all comes down to planning. Ticket FIRST. All the rest AFTER. Look, you are setting yourself for more snark by acting so self rightous. And by the way, I have my costumes, my art project, my camp, AND my ticket which I bought the first day they became available. End of story.

Quite frankly, my financial situation is none of your business. And, there are plenty of long-time veteran Burners who have planned everything about their trip to Burning Man (camp, ride, etc.) without getting their ticket first. Intended example: the long list of prominent DJs who have planned to play sets all over the playa, the ePlaya forum post from the 15-year Burner seeking a ticket back home. I know of many well-known artists who usually wait to purchase their tickets *at the gate*. Criticize all you want, but newbies, veterans, artists, drivers, designers, and volunteers alike are finding themselves without tickets this year. Just because you have everything set to go, doesn't give you the right to talk shit on anyone who doesn't have a ticket.

It all starts with a ticket. If you choose to change your own priorities and put other things ahead of that, you do so at your own peril. Risks you face include not being able to get a ticket, or facing ridicule from others if you choose to make your story a public case.

Duh. Doesn't change the fact that me, and thousands of other well-deserving human beings who wanted to go to Burning Man this year need a ticket. Or the fact that many people, like myself, will continue to use this forum in hope of finding a ticket. I'm not giving up without a bitter fight to the end, and I WILL see you on the playa this year.

Not if you keep spending your time and energy in a thread that ticket sellers are paying no attention to. I know you said you read the boards, but your actions seem to indicate otherwise. Seriously, read the announcements and sticky posts.

It's been said before and I always tell people that the ticket is the least expensive and easiest part of Burning Man. Amazing how many people claim finally had the money on the day tickets sold out.

I've been off eplaya for a couple of days... No Internet where I am.
Coming back in I am just amazed that people like sparklemiss whatever would even think that putting up a post is worth their time.
Clearly many many people were trying to get a cheap ticket - holding out to near TTITD to get a discount ticket of someone who had bought a ticket but was not able to go. Is that reverse scalping.... It is still taking advantage of others....
Anyway good luck!

Fish has posted 100 or 1000 times more 'digital moop' than sparkle. Also, Fish gets the credit for causing this thread to grow, not sparkle.

If anything, Sparkle gets props for putting up with the bullying and defending herself.

Well let her voice be heard. In fact she can be Queen of Eplaya and lord over ALL the posts while the rest of us are at the Burn. Enjoy.

Maybe you will even consider it a graduation gift for all my hard work.

Oh, go fuck yourself.

Can you not get any more creative than puking out this simplistic, Narcissistic bullshit?

If you want a ticket you are going to have to do a whole level of better than banging out this slop.

And yeah, people who think they should be rewarded for doing good things makes this reader laugh as well.
