My playa family and he universe has provided for me so far Mindyhook.

Don't be turned off by the negative haters here. Just make sure that you make every effort to get your mom involved in manifesting a ticket.

Negative haters... Really?
I count the snark level to be moderate at worst. A handicap was alluded to but still has not been revealed. The work done with volunteering is quite admirable, but the amount of it seems to preclude efforts at earning a living or eeking out an existence. So mamy of the comments in the 'big reveal' are nearly counter to what we were first exposed to. Being unable to work and doing the things that she describes seems rather contradictive. Feeding the poor and starting a farm seem to be fairly active endeavors. Because a person who is asking for the handout of a free ticket because she "deserves" it is scrutinized and called to the mat doesn't make anyone a 'hater'. The very fact that she uses the term 'deserve' as a justification and then throws her volunteer work into the mix as a furthejr justification calls into question if she truly understands the nature of charity.
My advice - if you do indeed do all the things you describe, then contact BMORG, explain your plight and ask if there are volunteer opportunities that might earn you a ticket. I have said it before - my first burn was attended on a ticket I received for busting ass with DPW for a certain number of clean up weekends. If you are planning on hitchhiking to the middle of nowhere anyways - do it a few months early if they still do such things and earn it. DPW is a group that if you treat them right, they can be the best dysfunctional family of amazing misfit toys you could evr associate with.
Cowboy up and take control of this - you apparently have the capabilities to great things for other people at your own expense - be a little selfish and use that energy and drive on yourself.

But I guess I am just a hater....

The next time you get the universe's attention can you put in a good word for a unemployed 54yr old with a wealth of experience who just needs to be considered for a position and who, coincidentally, spends the time he's not knocking on doors and sending out resumes volunteering at a local farm (whose raison d'être is to provide for local food banks), practicing self reliance and not asking for handouts?

Thanks.

Okay, this is one of my "well..." moments. While I support being open about these things, being poor and being disabled each sort of ends up being viewed by the wider world as not being entitled to privacy. Now, she is asking for money/ticket and I can see that that means that she may have to expect that she might have to give a fuller explanation before getting that ticket in her hot little hand.
I wouldn't put it out on the board, not after the response she received. So once again, I'm feeling ambivalent.

I don't think the problem is people asking for help; I think the problem is strangers asking for help. Something just rubs me the wrong way about someone coming to the board and their first post is "Give me money" in some form or another.

Login, post an introduction, contribute something to the forum. Then, at least, you have your audience in a much more receptive mood. People are much more open to helping people they know and care about.

(this holds true for everyone but Laughing Forest)

And frankly, my true opinion on this is that if someone is so impoverished that they have to ask for money to go to Burning Man, they shouldn't be going in the first place. If for no other reason that it breaks the tenant of "Radical Self Reliance" before you even get there!

Maybe there should be a sticky post on how to beg for money/tickets on eplaya and not get flamed. (as much)

Nope.

There was a big legal deal about selling whole blood or plasma as being a form of prostitution.

So you donate, and they pay you.

Probably has something to do with being illegal to sell your body parts. I used to give blood for extra money when I was in college. But you could only donate once every three months, if I remember correctly. They paid $14.00 a pint. I think I only did it once.

I was suggesting that jkisha be reckless and take a gamble as to what parts of Fishy don't wish to make an instructional post for free ticket seekers. That could not possibly go wrong.

My (previously withheld) advice to Mindylook--are you there, chica?--is to give up on wringing cash out of this particular crowd, because threatening to sneak in was not a smooth move, and no one likes to camp with a sneak-thief, especially one who doesn't know better than to hide a trait that should be embarrassing. (What else might you steal because you really, really had to have it, and felt deserving? And if that's the only thing, why should we take you at your word? We don't know ya.)

Mindylook, google some groups of Burners in your hometown. After all, even if you get a free ticket somehow, you're still going to need a ride, and this is easiest with locals. Attend local Regional events. Make Burner friends. Show them that you're an awesome person. (That won't be difficult, if you are as deserving as you say you are). Join in fundraisers locally. Reminder: don't threaten to rob the till. It makes people cranky.

Whoops. I lied. Only two:

(although it's amusing that while they have both ventricles on the 4-chambered model, the only labeled one, possibly confusing some.)

edited to correct: "...it's a musing..." which sound weak and pathetic!
Edited again to replace "labored" with "labeled."

With plasma, they take a pint, centrafudge it, return the red cells, then repeat.

Takes about 2hrs. and you can "donate" twice a week.

Well, it won't make you rich, but it would give a person enough money to buy a Burning Man ticket or two.

I think a requirement of having at least 5 replies to post a new topic would clean out the riff-raff nicely. Sure it'd harm the one-post ticket sellers, but that's not a huge loss really.

At first I thought that was a good idea, then I remembered how hard it is for some people just to make their first introductory post after months of lurking. So, though that idea has appeal, I don't think it would accomplish its objective without discouraging well intended, but shy newbies.

That would be a pain in the ass to implement. Therefore, I heartily disagree. Those asking for money who have not taken the time to gauge the temperament of the board get what they get. The "no immediate snark" request, well, perhaps we could welcome, advise, and explain before snarking.

Heck, just treat them like pan-handlers. Do you harangue a pan-handler in the street if you don't feel like giving them anything? I doubt that you do. Why not ignore them here as well? Let those who care to give make their choice as well, instead of dreaming up new rules for us.
