Scientology and its analogs creep me out. I went to a few 'sessions'(?) with a 'friend' when I was about 16. It made me very uncomfortable to see adults acting as they did.
When older I researched their philosophies, practices, and beliefs in an attempt to clarify my impressions from the past. I arrived at the same conclusion I had as a young man. They appear like diehard sci-fi fans who love to play sub 24/7 to masters they pay for the mindfuck.
I love sci-fi and porn as well but you won't find me pushing rishathra on you. If screwing alien hominids isn't your cup of tea, I understand and will not continue insisting that it is THE BEST sex you've ever had (even though it is).

To the OP: Get fisted! There are many paths to enlightenment. Yours is not the only nor the best way. I know that Landmarker's can get overboard and be extra pushy ...highly annoying I agree. but as intelligent people we can just not sign up and that's it...so what?
as to the pricing I find it rather inexpensive (think shrink or pilates session that cost 100$/hr on average at least here in NYC)

I have done a few Landmark courses couple of years ago. SELP (self-expression-leadership-program) that someone mentioned here is EXCELLENT.
it just helps you get a project on the road...whatever you chose. it's very much in the empowering/DIY -spirit of burningman as is much else they say. I separate message from delivery method/messenger.

I have been to BM 14 times...I am free-spirited and not one to belong to groups/herds myself and I welcome any thinking on the playa. I am strong enough to walk away. that's the color of BM having the variety.

What I found distasteful was the feeling that I was being slyly marketed to on a forum for an event that is anti-commerce. The Burn, for me, represents--among many other things--freedom from people who Want Something From Me.

People should not come here or to the Burn with the idea of selling something, and be surprised when people get cranky.

I saw this thread and had to jump in for the following reasons:

i HAVE done forum + advanced.
yes i was marketed at, and yes that pissed me off to no end. but it's my choice about how much to engage.
Yes some elements seem freakin weird to anyone who hasn't done it.

Does it work: i duuno coz i can't speak for anyone but myself...

but..

i can now speak to my mum about anything (totally impossible before), and don't feel like i have an empty hole in me that needs filling with anything that would let me forget what a horrible person i was(so i thought). i also properly connected with my dad whom i have only ever met maybe 9 times and manage to tell him i loved him, and forgave him for not being there.
i like myself and can look myself in the eye in the mirror and like what i see.

and i am proud that i can now do these things.


anyone with 2 braincells to rub together should maybe try something before commenting or assuming anything.
that's called wisdom.

what i find more amusing than anything is that there seem to be more zealots on the "have not done" side rather than the "done side". most people who have gone through are just happy to continue with their lives being happier people who are nicer to everyone around them... and for the most part marginally less weird than Hare krishnas or scientologists... or sci fi readers... or WoW players.

Ultimately: who cares.

just ask yourself this if confronted by forumites:
are they good people? (yes/no)
am i comfortable enough to listen to them ramble on (yes/no)

if you answer no... then why are you still standing there?

I know people that have gone through the training. They are all zealots for the program and how much they have benefitted and how much it has done for them. Interesting, my perception regarding how they benefited is in no way in alignment with theirs. Rather than exhibiting the positive results they brag about, they are actually IMHO in a worse position than they were before their training. Before, they knew their problems. Now they still have their problems and maybe a few new ones, but they just believe they don't.

That's my problem with it.
