As the week progresses, and more big DJ
names spin Friday and Saturday sets, a new
battle has started on the playa. Paul Oakenfold
was the first to accept big money
(reportedly $50K for a single set) to spin,
and his gold plated RV has been a fixture
on the playa for four years running. And
now other star DJs are lining up to the
raver camp trough.
Tired of hearing Oakenfolds sets at
Burning Man, Root Society opted to up
the stakes, and invited DJ Tiesto to spin
opposite Oakenfold on Friday night. Our
only problem was funding. Tiesto comes
with a pretty steep price, and apparently
hes not into the Commissary tickets and
RV sleeping space weve been able to bring
our other DJs in with, said Baron von Beat,
the lead promoter for Root Society. So, we
decided to turn to corporate sponsorship to
get him in.
When I first heard from von Beat, I told
my publicist to drop the call, but when we
heard back from the folks from the NabiscoTM
family, I was a lot more compelled
to join in on the burning of the men, said
Nabisco DJ Tiestito. I mean, say what
you want about Oakenfold, but does he
have a bag of chips with his name on it? I
didnt think so, Tiestito said as he pulled a
bag of mini-wafers from his Nascar-esque
Nabisco uniform. Plus, signing a 3-year
$12 million contract doesnt hurt, I guess. I
mean, whos the bullshit sheep fucker now,
Oakendfold?

SSM told him about the Tiestito contract.

contract rings in at 5 years and $20 million
and also come with a significant signing
bonus.
Though the exclusive contract was already

lined up Fatboy SlimJimTM, to headline for

pairing here on the playa, or anywhere

With the gauntlet thrown, Opulent Temple-
head Maximum Awesome started moving
in the direction of quantity over quality.
Included in the lineup for the weekend
are Krafts Vanilli Snack PackTM (of Milli
Vanilli fame), Oh Boy! Oberto GeorgeTM,
Gary Coleman Camping AmazingTM, and
AAA-RodTM.

the Deep End has reportedly signed on

to perform for their final closing set. No

OT killed it this year with their elite dj lineup minus the midget Oakie whom blows anyways !!

I made it to RS on Saturday night and enjoyed Jelo's set and Dan's set. What i didnt like was the "Host" of RS getting in the mic every chance he could to flaunt his dome and his name. By the way, his djing skills sucked. This is what happens when some chump gets ahold of tons of cash and does a rave camp on the Playa.

Atleast OT didnt kill the vibe by talking over their dj's !!!

My vote goes to OT once again.

Does anyone have any confirmed info on whether Opulent Temple will be back this year? I'm already looking forward to visiting Root Society too. The youtube videos of the space look awesome. That's a crazy big dome. Sadly, the sound on those videos is a bit sketchy, so I'm not really getting the full effect on the legendary sound system. Just one more thing to wait for....hmm, how many more days til I leave?

as far as Op Temp goes, i believe they are indeed coming back, but i do not have confirmation, only relatively good sources of which i am in contact with.

i'd say it's a pretty good bet if you're the gambling type.

this year the dome set-up might be a little different, the Monster Dome will be there as well as a new dome and sub-structure...

but it's a secret....so you'll just have to wait and see.

I've seen circus silk performers/acrobats in the dome that are pretty sweet too. How long does it take you guys to put up that structure? I'm sweating about securing my little shade structure, I can't imagine how much work goes into erecting that beast.

alot...alot alot.

the big dome weighs 18,000 lbs. without the cover. The cover weighs a over half a ton.

it's about a week all total to set up everything from domes and tipis to electrical / sound / lighting / stage.

we usually finish on wed. approx 1/2 hour before we are supposed to let it rip.

it is a labor of love, and all 80 or so members of root society work very hard on whatever their specialty is to make it all happen.

and it's all about your booties shaking.

the best thank you we can get is the smiles when you're having a good time, thats pretty much it.

i always say that the chef is most satisfied when he peeks out the window of the kitchen to watch his diners enjoy their meal, this is what turns his/ her crank. This is why we do it. After spending many years on the playa, i think one naturally evolves from doe eyed wonder / spectator to participant to contributor / organizer / artist....we remember what it was like to suddenly experience the most liberating week in one's life, and if we can make that first or second or third trip so good that you want to bring others along to see what you saw, then we have succeeded in passing the torch on.

yeah, we're crotchety. yeah, we can be snarky as shit, and seemingly the worst assholes on earth, but i think you'll find that anyone who is a "burner" wants you to have a good, safe, mind-blowing time and come back next year, ready to notch it up.

and thats not to say that bigger is better....far from it...my most profound moments on the playa have come from small, seemingly innocuous bits of happenstance, that shook my world even though no one else might have noticed. That little camp on the outskirts may contain all that you ever wanted and more. The small piece of personal artwork that someone gifts you, you WILL keep forever, because it MEANS something to you. We often forget that the esplanade is just the surface, a mere layer that should be seen (how can you avoid it?) but also taken for what it is, a Brightly lit entry point into the world of burning man, a world that keeps growing, changing and evolving, and contrary to popular complaint, is not stale or static.

anyway, now that i've typed my sunday afternoon whacked out on too many expressos diatribe, i hope you come visit us at RS as well as the many other nifty cool golly gee whiz holy shit places that will be all around you, waiting for YOU to come and enjoy.
