I kept hearing this crazy electronic music around that was sounded like weird russian gypsy music with accordions and a fast paced beat to it (almost calliope?), and I'd love to know if it has a name and where I can find some of it. I heard it on BMIR but never caught a name, and also just around from various art cars and clubs. A couple of times I tried to track down a dj to ask but failed miserably. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about or is this just gibberish?

I heard what you're talking about but I have no idea what it was... I did, however, catch Beats Antique at the Do Lab, and they have a similar style... check them out.

Very similar stuff, if the same kind of horns and stuff were put to a faster electronic beat, this would be it. But this is great, thanks for sharing it.

Not electronica, but you might check out Gogol Bordello and Firewater for Gypsy/Rock kind of stuff. (Although Firewater has been moving away from the gypsy sound lately.) Balkan Beat Box, J.U.F. hhhmm,

Aha! SOCALLED is a dj who mixes klezmer music. That might do it. MySpace is still good for something.

I wasn't at the burn so I don't know if I've identified your mystery music, but there is enough here for a good start.

I played a bunch of this type of stuff on BMIR. Monday at Sunset, and the following Sunday (during the temple burn), about the same time.

My all time favorite album in this genre: Dunkelbunt - Raindrops and Elephants

Some other stuff along the same lines, Shantel, Gogol Bordello, Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Zydepunks....

Don't have my books in front of me, if you were listening during that time and wondering anything that was played, message me.

And ya, Gypsy Punk has long been a staple on the playa. Lately transitioned into Electro Balkan. After witnessing a large metal dome deep inside BRC on Friday night with a bright Star of David in rope lights, and a bunch of jew kids bouncing all over it singing and banging sticks on it (like a drum) chanting to the Sabbath... I expect (and kinda hope) Klezmer becomes the next big playa thing (go Ra$$pa!).

NeonBunny - I thought it was you that was playing some of this stuff, but I went to your website and didn't hear anything like it on your samples so I thought I was wrong. (Great stuff in your demos as well, just not the style I was trying to find). Thanks for introducing me to a new genre!

On our art car, we were playing Gogol Bordello, Beats Antique and some really cool Nortec from Nortec Collective (Nortec comes from Tijuana and sounds a bit Gypsy-like). Could've been that.

I agree, I'm hoping to hear more of this on the playa. It's a nice break from all the techno.

Ya, I need to put a demo on my web site that isn't geared towards dj'ing at generic techno clubs. That was so 2009!

But i'm feeling inspired now to do a demo of these genres.

Heya, GlobalRuckus here. I played two sets at the Hookah Dome outside, one at the Black Rock Boutique and two at Dustfish. Thursday early evening (HD), Saturday day (BRB), night (DF), into sunrise (HD), Sunday night (DF again). My good friend Joro Boro (formerly of New York's ground zero gypsy beats club Mehanata) also played at all those locations at various times, sometimes with me. In particular, he brought some hot new unlreased Balkan Beat Box trax that were totally slamming and I was rocking a bunch of highspeed Balkan/gypsy/bhangra/middle Eastern electronica that was clearly very well received.
Definitely for Balkan Beats 101 - Look for Shantel, Balkan Beat Box, Gogol Bordello, and Dunkelbunt. There are some pretty good mixed albums that will get you a lot of different styles including the Electric Gypsyland and the Gypsy Beats and Balkan Bangers and Shantel's Bucovina Club releases. Most of that is more mid-tempo. I'll be working on a couple mixes of some more obscure stuff you'll be able to download off the web hopefully by the end of next week. A Balkan speed freaks mix and a Hookah Dome outside heavy set mix. I'll try to come back and put a link up when it's done.

I'd love to have that heavy set.

There was a track that played many nights at hookahdome that I've love to get my hands on. I can only remember and describe the main beat which was something to the effect of:

AAAAGGGGA-------
AAAAGGGGA-------
AAAAGGGGAAAAGGGGAAAAGGGGA-------

Those notes span over 8 bars, each being an eighth note. The dashes are just silent, but during those beats there are some nice trumpets or trombones. Is that descriptive at all? I don't really know music theory.

"AGGGGAAAAAAA, AGGGGGAA" sounds more like polka.

I was looking for this music when I stumbled across this forum. The only thing I know is I heard it coming out of a smaller double decker artcar with, i wanna say lanters, hanging from it. at 6:30 and esp on sunday predusk. Not like dunklebunt, it was crazy circus gypsy music with fast tempo dnb IT WAS AWESOME. I'd also like to know what the funky cartoon music with bubbles popping was. Its hard to explain the sounds you hear out on that playa but they stick with you.

I came across this forum and post looking for some 'gypsy' music names too. I've heard most of that mentioned here, but when you say fast paced rhythym with gypsy on top I was surprised not to see Ed Cox's name mentioned! Mind you he's only been in public eye for couple of years. He plays accordian on top of techno/dnb/breakcore/hardcore, well any of the cores really. His album is called Clowncore. The whole Life4land crew are very heavy electronic and gypsy based style musicians and dj's and I highly recommend!

I've set up a facebook group for music suggestions in relation to gypsy music. The member list is pretty select, spamming your own stuff isn't accepted because we want a diverse range of tunes from a diverse range of bands. Our use of the 'gypsy' label is pretty broad and basically covers anything with a hint of gypsy or folk. Have a listen to the playlists and ask to join the group if you've any good contributions to make!
