Are there vendors at Burning Man?

Postby monsoonvermont » Fri Mar 06, 2009 8:53 am

Just wondering, do people sell their art at Burning Man?

Are there vendors there at all? Is everything run through the organization Burning Man, food, goods, etc?

Ice and coffee are only items for sale. Everything else is BYO.

You must mean that you are still waiting for people to read all the BM preliminary info, like the survivors guide, before posting?

Everytime I read a post you wrote JKisha, I think you are always joking because of the "JK" you put on the end -even though I fully realize you're just signing your initials, I still think you're joking...

I see you only had one post, which was your question about vendors. You never got a WELCOME TO EPLAYA!
Since you have never been to BM before, it's hard to imagine what the place is like. My first time I expected to be able to find some trees or shrubs to hang my shower bag. When I got there, I found a dried lakebed that stretched miles in every direction and no place to hang a shower bag.
Your question makes perfect sense. When going to a festival like this that showcases amazing art, you might expect booths or stalls selling art. This is not the case here however. There is simply no commerce allowed. Should you run out of water at the far end of the event, simply go to the closest camp and they will give you what you need---for free! You will quickly see the nice side of people and realize that no one is going to take advantage of you. I put my wallet in my pants pocket and put the pants away for the week. Money only for ice and coffee!
I hope this helps and I hope to see you do at least one more post to let us know that you're still alive!

You can certainly get their info for later though. As far as vendors - there are some infrastructure vendors around - but arrangements are made before hand, the only commodity inside BM gates requiring cash is:

Ice Sales - Per Nevada Department of Health I believe
Coffee Sales - Net goes to the local schools et.al.
RV Pooper pump out - Per BLM I believe, keeps the poo off the playa or in the ditches.

Water, Domes, Showers, Food, Freight, Fuel, Power and Transportation services are all represented by contractors with said arrangements made beforehand.

Yes, there is no art for sale. However you can still go home with a metric fuckton of art, if you desire. People give away their art, even to newbies who've only posted once. You can get pendants, prints, and hippie pieces of crap. One very nice place to "shop" for a piece of art freely given (but please don't just take something) is AntiM's Home for Wayward Art, where you can adopt one of several amazing pieces of naive or sophisticated art that will grace your walls when you get home. And I'm not scuking up to AntiM because she's a mod on this board. I'm sucking up to her because she's a very fine human being and she'd be an "inspiration" if we believed in such things.

Besides being a fine human being (no offense) and a good person, she can also raise your post count.

People are sucking up to me now? Oh, the pressure! The pressure!

But yes, I do run a gallery where you can adopt art and take it home with you. I do like it when people bring art for others to enjoy.

I guess I was focusing more on the "Are the any vendors at Burning Man" I've gotten used to the question "Can you sell stuff at Burning Man" ... I still think sexual favors should be sold in Center Camp.

You can sell drugs. And children under 5, but only if they're healthy. Also, kiddie porn is ok, pirated dvds, knock-off Gucci and Dolce and Gabbana handbags. Prostitution is ok, but everyone is kinda dirty, so keep that in mind.

Any other questions?
