Since I would like to improve the level of music on the playa, I have decided to offer my services as a DJ.
I will bring my extensive collection of music with me and set up in your theme camp and not play my eclectic mixes.
I will not play them on your art car.
I will set up shop under spots on your stage and not play.
You can wrap me in elwire and bathe me in strobes and I will continue to not play.
I will continue to not play the entire week.
I will watch real things going on and enjoy them.
I will ride on and enjoy your art car.
I will enjoy the people in the camp.
I promise not to play anything all week.
My gift to you.

(I will give everyone in the camp my special 8 hour version of Funkytown consisting of the same thirty second loop subtly phase shifted in each variation for the entire eight hours. This is for the ride home. You are not required to play it.)

very funny gyre.
today i played a "gig". as most of my "gigs" are this summer, just for the money. I do the usual cover bullshit songs, have a few originals thrown in for the few people who come to see me and hang still. Today was a lake bar outside gig. on breaks there is music. constant music.

I made an announcement that i was about to play my very favorite song and it was just 1 minute long. I've actually never done it before but today it was perfect. It was a minute of nothing. We all listened to the wind and the boat motors and the kids in the water and the huckleberry lemonades going down.

Lake sounds....nice.
One of my favorite pieces has harbor sounds in UK with people on the docks talking, spaced with some instrumental guitar.
I like to mix in animal and natural sounds.
I think the french called it musique concrete, to make music of natural sounds.
I love the beer tab opening to the King of the Hill theme.

Nothing is worse than those idiots that try to add music to every nature documentary and news show with good quality audio already.
In some cases obtained at great cost!
Is there a class teaching that?
They used to add music to nature shows because it was impossible to get live recording.
Does anyone want to watch a video of the surf and have it drowned out by someone's dreary unimaginative meanderings on guitar?

Less believable, I have seen this done to drown out race cars and fireworks!!!
What's the thought process there?

I can not play any variety of music, including all the varieties of rap, hiphop, bunnyhop, bicoastal, whatever.
I can explain all the varieties I won't play.
Techno is usually the same song repeated endlessly, though I do have some interesting acoustic and vocal techno I can bring and not play.
Some dance music dates back to sixties discothÃ¨que stuff that was made specifically for the clubs.
Though this is almost forgotten, much of the dance varieties track back to this.
My collection dates from the beginning of recording history to this millennium.

I can refuse to play all types of folk and international music too.
I have a bagpipes mix that gets a lively response from the neighbors when used to greet the dawn.
I could not play that in the morning.

Gyre...

I'd rather hear funkytown over and over all week then that one popular break beat track played everyday, all day by every DJ and MV on the playa. I love BM for the diversity. However, the lack of diversity in music is rather noticable. I got mad compliments last year for playing Jimi Hendrix and Led Zepelin. Not that I stick to classic rock for the week but the people have spoken!

Can't wait to see you MV out on the playa. Hope you don't have any mechanical problems and that it runs like an American Dream all week!

I think I could make Funkytown last a week.

There is a reason we are so happy to hear that forgotten song in a strange place.
That emotional connection is why they have muzak.

Maybe that's a good reason to play something new out there?

Could you come to our camp and not play Sandstorm? That song ruined a night of perfectly good dancing a few years back. Yeah yeah, there was a dust storm going on and I'm sure DJ Douchebag thought he was being REALLY clever, but once that fucking song starts I'm pretty much done for the evening

Great post. Going to Burning Man and not hearing Oakenfold/Tiesto-ey trance is like going to NOLA during Mardi Gras and not hearing Iko Iko or Hey Pocky Way.

I'd be disappointed. Beats the piss out of the 24x7 '80s dance comp that our neighbors were playing last time. I guess that's the problem; Southern Sun is a wonderful song, but if everybody in New Orleans played nothing but Iko or Da Saints 24x7, you'd have to pay extra to request those songs at Preservation Hall. Which, quite often, you do. (Cover bands ought to put a $100 surcharge on Mustang Sally or Freebird requests.)

BTW, here's what I'll playing around my camp this year. We're leaving the Tiesto, Moby and Oakenfold at home 'cause if we want to hear any of it all we'll have to do is turn our music off:

A lot of people have told me and campmates that the reason why they enjoy the Exploratorium isn't the cool stripper pole in the middle or the black lights or the rope lights... but the fact that we play music that you DON'T normally hear on the Playa. A lot of our cruising music isn't electonic at all. We encourage improv stripper performances. You are more prone to get that with Motley Crue's 'Girls, Girls, Girls' than Tiesto's 'Traffic'.

One of our campmates will agree with that. Not long ago somebody dropped $200 on the piano for him to play "Sweet Child o' Mine." So he did.

I have a friend who is hosting a karaoke camp this year. He's big into brown eyed girl, mustang sally, etc. Really nice guy. He's gonna be over in the 3 o'clock area, and so I'm gonna be at around 9.

There's a cut version for radio play; no drum solo. When I was a teen, I'd call up the local country radio station and request it about once a week. They hated me. In the innocent days before caller ID and Star69.
