Who, What Where Guide -- What?

I brought this to the webmaster and it was suggested that improving the situation with better databases should be initiated and implemented by Burners on the outside.

That's great. I volunteer. (And I need a bunch of volunteer code-heads familiar with SQL, javascript and PHP to pull it off).

One problem...there was no response when I told the webmaster that in order for such a thing to work, we'd need the endorsement of Burning Man corporate and to be hosted on Burningman.com

I just can't imagine how it could ever be effective if not plugged into the rest of the BM machine.

I have yet to learn SQL stuff beyond the brief stint getting someones SQL based shopping cart system up and running.

I actually did that too. And still couldn't find most of them, as the WHEREs were often not available until you got to the playa, and even then many smaller camps were not on the pocket map.

One friend suggested a data dump of the website to a laptop pre-playa, but that would still require a reliable WHERE guide once there.

So I basically gave up, and just wandered. Had many wonderful serendipitous encounters, but missed lots too.

The guides were very pretty, but a better pocket guide with whens and wheres would be gratefully admired by all.

They shouldve made it simply a 3" x 5" index card that said

"Yup, things are happening out there!"

No harm meant, but our 2 virgins from quebec, had that thing in their hands everytime I saw them, I wonder how much playa time they wasted trying to read it versus just going out and experiencing.

And I will have to say I forgot my note pad that had OUR EVENTS on it, tried to find us in the wwww and could'nt.

Yeah. the burning man guide was a serious cross referencing nightmare. I think the intent of the change was to make it easier to use, although it didn't succeed in many respects. What I had to do was get out a piece of paper, go through the day all at once with a pen and mark the ones that seemed interesting. Once I marked the interesting things in the book I would go back and do the cross-referencing with the event info pages, writing down the time and location on the piece of paper. Then I would take the piece of paper with me for that day so that I could quickly look and see what I wanted to do during any time of the day. Unless you do some sort of pre-choice, carrying around the book of any year is pretty much useless because there is just too much information to process at a glance.

It's hard to break into the tech team. Has been for a long time, for various reasons. If you can demonstrate that your help will outweigh the extra work of getting you set up it will make things easier, and I can use my meager connections to push things a bit. If you plan to wait for them to send you all their source code and spend weeks explaining how it all works so you can build on their system, don't hold your breath. Also don't hope that someone in a position of authority will read this board and contact you.

I'd suggest getting a team together and building the thing yourself, at least come up with a fleshed out design you can send them to demonstrate your willingness to put in the time. If they see a clear benefit you should be able to convince them to plug it into burningman.com. I have a lot of ideas about how the system could be improved, but don't have the time or coding skills to do it all myself.

This year was my first burn, and being the uber-prep girl that I am, made my own listing of camps and events that I wanted to check out.

This is what I'm currently doing but I fear that when I get there I'll end up just wandering around and seeing what I see, basically. However I'd like some sort of BRC map so I know I've covered ALL the City in the 7 days I'll be there - I've done a search to try and find info on a City map but to no avail - will there be one this year?

Placment isn't done yet, so the map isn't done yet either, it's coming soon.

Since this subject has been brought up again it may be a good time to congratulate the Higher Powers for the changes made to this years WWW procedure.

With all time high 3000+ entries and a short web to print window last years WWW guide was a disaster waiting to happen.

Changes made this year:

-Make it difficult to even find the Playa Events Calendar to submit your events.Unlike previous years,except for a week or two,there were no direct links from the Welcome Page to the PEC.

-Cut off entries at 1,400 or July 20th.A cap has never been imposed.The entry deadline this year was 10-14 days earlier than previous years.

Believe these changes were needed and well thought out.Imagine this years WWW guide will be a good one.

It's a safe assumption that regardless of what's been done this year the guide will be better...because when you start from rock bottom with the worst guide ever...there's really nowhere to go but up.

You need a photo id.
Passport works.
Good idea to bring confirmation paperwork always.
