With the Burning Man art festival starting in the Nevada desert in two weeks, organizers are pulling out the stops to minimize the event’s contribution to global warming.
Encouraged by the resurgence of the green movement, Burning Man organizers and participants are taking a hard look at environmental impacts. Over 28,000 tons of greenhouse gases are produced by the sacred flaming temples, solar-powered electric cars shaped like cupcakes, hundreds of rumbling RVs and 37,000 "burners" who attend the week-long event on the dry Black Rock Desert, according to scientists.
"Burning Man does a great job of getting on the ground after the event and picking up every nail and speck of glitter, but we want to take that to the next level -- leaving no trace in the climate," said Marian Goodell, Burning Man's director of communications and business.
